My Story...
I'm Belinda and I’m just like you - passionate about the image industry but always looking for a better way - I got lucky! I stumbled into the amazing world of digital marketing and haven't looked back...
Early years...
My passion for hair, beauty and make-up started early. I was always gathering up my siblings (I'm 1 of 4) & my cousins to curate fashion parades & performances. Of course my natural ability to lead (or boss them around) meant I carefully curated all their hair, make-up & wardrobe styling perfectly before instructing my Mum & Aunties to sit through my latest productions.
Always playing with my mum’s Nutrimetics makeup palettes and assisting her with dinner parties, I would encourage women to try new looks until they found what made them feel beautiful.
Fast forward to my later teen years, and I started my career in retail, working for fashion giant Sussans in 2001. I loved curating looks and helping women understand their shape and style. My constant desire to learn, led me to complete an International Diploma of Beauty Therapy, Spa Therapy, and Makeup in 2004, and I soon embarked on my entrepreneurial journey with my first salon at 22 - Hey Good Lookin Beauty.
Then the entrepreneurship bug really bit me...
Always aspiring to offer my clients more, I studied Image Consulting in 2009, which quickly became a beautiful passion. This allowed me to combine my knowledge of skin, makeup, and style, leading to the creation of my next salon, Sydney Beauty Boudoir.
Alongside the salon, I was mesmerised with the Pin-Up and Rockabilly world of fashion, cars and lifestyle. I launched Retro Dames—a vintage event, wedding, hair and makeup education, wardrobe styling, and boudoir photography business.
As the salon grew, so did the business. We rebranded as The Velvet Parlour in 2013, adding hairdressing services to meet the evolving needs of our clients. I continued to expand my skills, completing my Certificate 3 in Hairdressing in 2014. I had all the skills, great staff, a beautiful salon, now what...
Then I tried all the things that, well, didn't work...
Like many aspiring entrepreneurs, I faced my fair share of failures. It's a tough game and although we were getting by I always felt like we would hit a ceiling that we just couldn't break. Despite investing a small fortune (actually over 30K) in business coach's and countless programs, I struggled to crack it. I tried everything - new marketing tricks, constant promotions, never ending staff training, but the result was always just a minimal improvement.
These setbacks were disheartening, but they taught me invaluable lessons about resilience and adaptability. Each failure, though painful and expensive, was a stepping stone that provided me with critical insights and skills. By 2022, I realised the journey of having a brick and mortar salon was done for me. I sold the business and dove head first into the world of digital marketing.
Finally, I cracked the code!
My turning point came when I stumbled upon digital marketing. It started with a free webinar on social media marketing that piqued my interest. I decided to dive deeper and invested in comprehensive courses covering SEO, social media marketing, email campaigns, workflow automations, and pay-per-click advertising. I immersed myself in learning everything I could about these strategies.
Recognising that trading time for money and being on the tools is what had stopped me from learning and evolving digitally. If I had known how these tools can transform, automate, save time, cut costs and make life simpler for my business this would have been a different story! It was as if someone had turned on a light and it was absolutely mind blowing. The ideas started flowing and I realised how greatly this could impact my industry and help when times go quiet to still have the money coming in!
